Experiential Learning

Learning from experience is an effective and powerful educational tool. The Summer Institute China Program uses three particular methods in its experiential approach:

1) Simulations – The Summer Institute has designed its own proprietary simulations to provide participants with learning environments that mimic real-life scenarios. These problem-solving simulations are based on situations commonly encountered in the Chinese business environment. Participants solve problems collectively in groups, using pre-assigned role-play characters. Participants are required to seek out appropriate avenues to access information and then apply this information to solve the problems they have been given. Each simulation is followed by an extensive debriefing session to ensure that the desired lessons are shared and learned. Simulation topics include:

  • Permit acquisition
  • Political risk management
  • Environmental and CSR trade-offs
  • Labour relations
  • Dispute resolution

2) Mock Negotiations – The Summer Institute employs a variety of structured mock negotiations. Mock negotiations are an excellent mechanism for participants to practice negotiation styles and techniques in an educational environment. They also help participants strengthen their preparation skills and conduct during negotiations, all within a Chinese negotiating context. Past mock negotiations have included:

  • Trade and investment contracts
  • Joint-venture agreements
  • Power and energy use
  • Environmental management

3) Group Exercises – Group problem-solving exercises are used extensively throughout the program. These shorter tasks test participants’ abilities to work quickly and effectively in teams. Teams are comprised of not only participants, but also North American and Chinese instructors. Group exercise topics include:

  • Cross-cultural communication
  • Intellectual property
  • Taxation
  • Standards and integrity
